Every October, the Young Adult Library Services Association, part of the American Library Association, sponsors Teen Read Week to encourage teenagers to read for the fun of it. The theme of this year's Teen Read Week (October 14–20, 2007), "LOL @ your library," features humorous books and graphic novels.

Did you know that space exploration is a relatively recent phenomenon? The race for space began 50 years ago, on Oct. 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union put the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, into Earth orbit.

Help break the reading record! On September 20, 2007, read The Story of Ferdinand and help Jumpstart break the record for the largest shared reading experience ever. This Read for the Record milestone was set last year by 150,000 people on August 24, 2006, during the inaugural year of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign.
